Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today reiterated that the next national elections would take place between December this year and June next year, ensuring the most free, fair, and acceptable polls in Bangladesh’s history.
In a televised address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day and Eid-ul-Fitr, Professor Yunus emphasized the interim government’s strong commitment to conducting a transparent electoral process.
“The Election Commission (EC) has already begun full-scale preparations,” he stated, expressing hope that political parties would also engage enthusiastically in the election process.
Professor Yunus highlighted the formation of the National Consensus Commission, which has already begun work. Letters have been sent to 38 political parties, containing 166 recommendations and comprehensive reports from six reform commissions established earlier by the interim government.
Additionally, the government has initiated dialogues with political parties regarding electoral and political reforms. According to Professor Yunus, political parties have responded positively, providing their views on the proposed reforms.
“It is encouraging to see that all political parties are contributing their opinions, demonstrating a shared commitment to meaningful reforms,” he said.
The Consensus Commission is actively gathering feedback from all political parties to identify common ground on various reform issues. The July Charter, a guiding document for democratic reforms, will be based on these shared agreements.
“Our responsibility is to ensure full transparency throughout this process and hold the elections only after the necessary reforms are completed,” Professor Yunus assured.
At the beginning of his speech, the Chief Adviser paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War, honoring their sacrifice on the eve of Independence Day.
