The High Court on Wednesday sought information on the government’s steps regarding recent activities of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon), including its rally and Tuesday’s clashes in Chittagong.

Iskcon had filed an application in the High Court, seeking directives for imposing a state of emergency in Chittagong and Rangpur to prevent further unrest.

During the hearing, lawyer Moniruzzaman urged the bench of Justices Farah Mahbub and Debashish Roy Chowdhury to issue an order based on media reports concerning the issue.

Given the sensitivity of the matter, the court summoned Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman for his response.

The attorney general said: “There are attempts to destabilize the country from various quarters. The government is addressing the situation by fostering national unity and initiating dialogue with political parties on recent developments.”

Expressing its concern, the court said: “The law and order situation must be maintained to prevent any deterioration.”

The High Court has directed the government to submit a report on its actions regarding Iskcon’s activities and the recent clashes by Thursday.
