US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu said that the United States wants to overcome the discomfort and restore the trust of Bangladesh. He said, “Before the last election, when we talked about free fair elections. That desire was common among the people of the two countries. But then there was a kind of discomfort. Now we want to move forward.”
He said these things to reporters on Wednesday (May 15).
Highlighting the relationship between the two countries, Donald Lu said, “The United States worked hard to hold free, fair and violence-free elections in Bangladesh. We want to look forward, not back. We want to strengthen our relationship. We want to increase cooperation among ourselves.”
In response to a question about what was discussed in the meeting, the US Assistant Secretary said, “We want to find ways to strengthen our relationship. That is why I spoke to the minister today. There are many important issues between our two countries. Such as ban on RAB, labor law reform, human rights and business environment reform. To strengthen this relationship, we need to increase cooperation in a positive way.”
Highlighting the issue of investment in Bangladesh, Donald Lu said, “We talked about new investments. We have discussed that more Bangladeshi students will study in the United States. I talked about clean energy. The last thing I talked about with the minister is that we have to fight corruption.
Donald Lu added, “What we can do is transparency of government, accountability of public officials. We have talked about increasing the speed limit, so that Bangladesh can benefit from it.”
