The UN General Assembly voted on a proposal to grant Palestine full membership to the United Nations on Friday. In the end, the proposal was passed by a huge vote. The majority of 143 votes in favor of the creation of an independent Palestinian state while 9 countries, including the United States and Israel, voted against it. A total of 25 countries abstained from voting.

According to the report of the British media BBC, after the resolution to make Palestine a full member of the United Nations was passed, the General Assembly called on the Security Council to implement it. Because the decision to grant membership of a country to the United Nations can only be taken by the organization’s Security Council.

Countries that voted against Palestine were Czechia, Hungary, Argentina, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Israel and the United States.

Meanwhile, most of the countries that abstained from voting are from Europe. Notable among these are Germany, United Kingdom, Austria, Croatia, Fiji, Finland, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Romania and Ukraine. The North American country of Canada also abstained from voting.

It is believed that if a resolution is presented to the Security Council to admit Palestine to the United Nations, the United States will veto it. Earlier, the United States blocked Palestine’s proposal to become a full member of the United Nations last April.
