The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) in a drive seized 31 tonnes of rotten dates, estimated to be worth Tk 49 lakh, at Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj district on Tuesday.

A team of DNCRP, led by Dhaka Metropolitan Assistant Director of DNCRP Abdus Salam, raided at two establishments of Star Multipurpose Cold Storage in Kutubpur area of Kanchpur union and recovered the dates.

Assistant Director Abdus Salam said,”14 tonnes of dates were recovered from Moushumi Enterprise. These dates, with an original expiry date of 2021, were intended to be re-marketed with counterfeit stickers that would show that these dates have extended shelf life.”

“Another 17 tonnes of spoiled dates were recovered from Madina Enterprise, stocked with the intention of selling at higher prices during Ramadan,” he added.

DNCRP Narayanganj Assistant Director Selimuzzaman said, “These dishonest traders wanted to re-market these dates after creating a crisis in the market.”

“No one has been fined so far and legal actions were being taken in this regard after an investigation,” he added.
