The annual accident monitoring report of the accident monitoring cell of Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association has revealed various information about road accidents.

According to the report, 7 thousand 902 people were killed and 10 thousand 372 people were injured in 6 thousand 261 road accidents across the country in 2023. At the same time, 512 people were killed and 475 injured in 520 railway accidents. And 91 people were killed and 152 injured in 148 accidents on the waterway, 109 people are still missing.

Estimates say that in the last year, more than 21 people lost their lives every day on the road alone. And on average, more than 23 people lost their lives every day on roads, railways and waterways.

Meanwhile, motorcycles have been the cause of most accidents in total road accidents in the last year. This year 2 thousand 152 people were killed and 1 thousand 339 injured in 2 thousand 31 motorcycle accidents. This number is 32.43 percent or about one-third of the total accidents. And the number of people killed in motorcycle accidents is 27.23 percent of the total number of people killed in road accidents, and the number of injured is 12.90 percent of the total number of injured.

Earlier, at the beginning of 2023, the Passenger Welfare Association reported that 9,951 people were killed and 12,356 injured in 6,749 road accidents in the previous year in 2022. Compared to 2021, road accidents increased by 19.89 percent and fatalities by 27.43 percent in 2022. However, this year’s calculation says that compared to 2022, road accidents have decreased by 7.23 percent in 2023. And the loss of life in road accidents has decreased by 20.59 percent.

Mozammel Haque said, 1,950 drivers, 968 pedestrians, 485 transport workers, 697 students, 97 teachers, 154 members of law enforcement, 985 women, 612 children, 30 journalists, 32 doctors were affected by road accidents. , 16 brave freedom fighters, eight lawyers and 10 engineers and 111 leaders and activists of different political parties have been identified.

A total of 8,550 vehicles were identified in the organized accidents at this time. Among them, the highest 26.02 percent is motorcycles, the second highest is 24.84 percent trucks-pickup-covered vans and lorries and the third highest is 16.15 percent buses. Apart from this, 14.47 percent of battery operated rickshaws and easy bikes; 7.19 percent Nachiman, Kariman, Mahindra, Tractor and Laguna; 5.91 percent cars, jeeps and microbuses; And 5.39 percent of CNG-driven auto-rickshaws are involved in road accidents.

Of the total accidents organized, 52.83 percent were pedestrians hit by vehicles, 20.5 percent were head-on collisions, 14.29 percent fell into ditches due to loss of control, 11.40 percent were due to miscellaneous reasons, 0.27 percent were due to rolling of vehicle wheels and 0.68 percent were train-related accidents. A vehicle collision has occurred.

An analysis of the accident sites showed that 34.86 percent of the total accidents occurred this year on national highways, 28.41 percent on regional highways and 28.5 percent on feeder roads. Apart from this, 6.32 percent of the total accidents occurred in Dhaka city, 1.11 percent in Chittagong city and 0.68 percent occurred at railway crossings.

According to Yatri Kalyan Samiti, the number of small vehicles has suddenly increased several times in the outgoing year compared to the previous year. The organization says that due to free movement of these vehicles, road accidents have increased by 55.19 percent on feeder roads, 14.33 percent on national highways, zero and 16 percent on railway crossings. However, this time the accidents on regional highways have decreased by 49.33 percent compared to the previous year.

In 2023, 1,712 people were killed and 2,381 injured in 1,736 road accidents in Dhaka Division. 1,205 people were killed and 2,294 injured in 1,233 road accidents in Chittagong division. 764 people were killed and 1 thousand 78 people were injured in 765 road accidents in Khulna division. 379 people were killed and 992 injured in 381 road accidents in Barisal division.

Meanwhile, 464 people were killed and 665 injured in 418 road accidents in Mymensingh division. 403 people were killed and 926 injured in 371 road accidents in Sylhet division. 626 people were killed and 666 injured in 569 road accidents in Rangpur division. And 793 people were killed and 1 thousand 168 injured in 788 road accidents in Rajshahi division.

The highest number of accidents occurred on January 17 in the outgoing year. On this day, 20 people were killed and 31 people were injured in 35 road accidents. The least number of accidents occurred on March 26. Eight people were killed and 14 injured in 9 road accidents on this day.

The highest number of people were killed in the accident on July 7. On this day, 41 people were killed and 98 people were injured in 30 road accidents. And the most injured on March 4. On this day, 29 people were killed and 148 people were injured in 23 road accidents.
