A total of 2,712 candidates, including 747 independents, have submitted their candidacies to contest in 300 constituencies in the upcoming 12th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) elections.
For the January 7, 2024, election, 29 registered political parties nominated 1,965 candidates, according to Shariful Alam, Director of Public Relations for the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat.
According to the election schedule, nomination papers must be scrutinise by the EC by December 4 and candidates may file an appeal of the returning officers’ decisions by December 9.
The final lists of candidates show that Bangladesh Awami League (Boat) has submitted 304 candidates for 298 seats, whereas Jatiya Party-JaPa (Plough) has nominated 304 candidates for 287 seats.
Besides, Zaker Party (Rose) nominated 218 candidates while Trinamool BNP (Sonali Ash) 151, National People’s Party’ (Mango) 142 and Bangladesh Congress (Green Coconut) nominated 116 candidates to contest in the polls.
