A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Wednesday placed retired Lieutenant General of Bangladesh Army, Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy, on eight-day remand in a case filed for his alleged connection with a US citizen, Mian Zahidul Islam Arefy.

The metropolitan magistrate, Muhammad Shafi Uddin, placed the decorated retired officer on the remand after Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police produced him before the court on Wednesday following his arrest at Savar on Tuesday.

Sarwardy was a decorated military officer who served as director general of the Special Security Force between November 2011 and September 2012, protecting the prime minister.

He shot to fame for leading the rescue operation after the Rana Plaza collapse in 2013 as the general officer commanding of the Ninth Infantry Division at Savar.

Sarwardy was named in a case filed with the Paltan police station on Sunday night after attending a press conference with Mian Arefy at the BNP office.

BNP leader Ishraque Hossain, who was present at the press conference, was also named in the case filed by one Mohiuddin Ahmed, a man from Gopalganj.

Ishraque later regretted accompanying the retired general and Mian Arefy, with the latter falsely identifying himself as an adviser to US president Joe Biden.

The DB arrested Arefy at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday afternoon.

On Monday, he was sent to jail by Dhaka’s metropolitan magistrate, Md Ali Haider, after police prosecuted him on the charge of cheating people with false identities.
