Police filed a case with Shahbagh police station accusing over 5,000 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its associate organisations for their alleged involvement in attacks, vandalism and setting fire to motorcycles during taking the body of Jamaat leader Delwar Hosain Sayedee by an ambulance from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University to Pirojpur early Wednesday.

The case mentioned names of four people including Sayedee’s son Maswood Sayedee and Jamaat leader Hamidur Rahman Azad and 5000 unidentified Jamaat leaders and activists, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s deputy commissioner (media) Faruk Hossain.

He said that another case was lodged with Paltan Police station naming 16 Jamaat activists and unidentified 150 Jamaat men for attacking police and hindering the police to discharge the government duties at Baitul Mukarram National mosque centring ghayebana janaza for Sayedee.

The police officer said that both the cases were lodged on Wednesday night.

Sayedee, convicted in a war crimes case, was admitted to BSMMU on Monday evening and died there on Tuesday night. His body was released from BSMMU on early Wednesday.
