Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asserted that the BNP plans to come to power by promising to lease out Saint Martin’s Island.

“When BNP came into power in 2001, it promised to sell gas. Now they want to sell the country. They want to make a promise to sell St. Martin’s Island in exchange for power,” she said.

The PM was discussing the outcomes of her most recent trips to Qatar and Switzerland during a news conference held at the Gono Bhaban on Wednesday noon.

As the daughter of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hasina vowed that she has no desire to come to power through the sale of any national assets.

“Now, if I say that I will lease out St. Martin’s Island or our entire country, it won’t be a problem for me to preserve my position of power. I’m aware of that,” she said.

However, the prime minister committed to prevent anyone from interfering with the fate of Bangladeshi nationals.

“We won’t tolerate any actions like participating in terrorist activities anywhere or attacking anyone using the territory of my country,” she vowed.

“We advocate for international peace. We support peaceful cooperation. Even after about 11 lakh Myanmar migrants took shelter in Bangladesh, Bangladesh and Myanmar have not engaged in any disputes,” said PM Hasina.  She noted that discussions on the issue are still underway with Myanmar and that Bangladesh’s government upholds the motto “friendship to all and malice towards none.”

From June 13 to June 16, Hasina was in Switzerland to take part in the “World of Work Summit: Social Justice for All,” and from May 22 to May 25, she was in Qatar to attend the Qatar Economic Forum-2023.
