The movie “Maa,” is set to debut at the Marche du Film, the commercial arm of the 76th Cannes Film Festival as the only Bangladeshi movie. Pori Moni stars in the movie directed by Aranya Anwar.

Director Aranya Anwar confirmed the Cannes premiere of ‘Maa’ on Tuesday (May 9).

He said, “As a creator, having my first production released in Bangladesh on May 19 and also premiering at Cannes simultaneously is an immensely satisfying experience. It is my fervent desire to see the movie reach a global audience through both the Cannes Festival and its distribution in Bangladesh. The film is dedicated to all the mothers across the world.”

Aranya Anwar revealed that the movie “Maa” would hit theaters in Bangladesh on May 19, coinciding with International Mother’s Day. Following the domestic release, he and the producer Pulak Kanti Barua will travel to Cannes Beach in France to showcase the movie at its premiere. Their objective is to engage with other film producers and distributors worldwide to promote “Maa” globally.

Pori Moni, who had been on maternity leave for some time, makes her return to national and international screens through this highly anticipated film, which was shot just before her hiatus. The film has garnered widespread attention, with various promotional campaigns, including the release of the poster, trailer, song, and behind-the-scenes content.

The plot of the movie is set during the liberation war and revolves around the heart-wrenching tale of a mother with a seven-month-old baby who is presumed dead. Titled “Maa,” the movie is being produced by Aranya Anwar and stars Pori Moni as the grieving mother.

Commenting on the movie, Pori said, “The making of this movie will remain a cherished memory for me for the rest of my life. During the filming of “Maa,” I was four months pregnant with my son Rajya, and yet, I portrayed the character of a mother with him in my womb. Now, as the movie is getting ready for release, I hold my little kingdom in my arms. The feeling of overwhelming joy is indescribable.”

Aranya Anwar, a renowned filmmaker in the country, has captivated audiences with his impressive body of work, including acclaimed dramas such as ‘Our Nurul Huda.’ ‘Maa’ marks his first venture into the world of cinema after a successful three-decade career.

The film, produced under the banner of Aranye Pulak (AP), features a talented ensemble cast including Azad Abul Kalam, Farzana Pictures, Saju Khadem, Rebena Karim Jui, Shilpi Sarkar Apu, Setu, Labanya, and Shahadat Hossain, who portray various roles in the movie.
