Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen dismissed a report by Deutsche Welle, a German-based media outlet, which suggested that the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) was being used for political purposes rather than security. When asked about this, Momen responded with a laugh and stated that RAB is being used solely for security purposes.
He made this comment in response to questions from journalists after a meeting with the UN Resident Representative Gwen Lewis at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday (April 3).
In regards to the upcoming National Assembly election, Momen expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to conduct free and fair elections without the assistance of the United Nations. He cited the country’s transparent voter list and strong Election Commission as evidence of their capability to hold credible elections.
During the meeting, the Foreign Minister also addressed the recent arrest of a journalist from Prothom Alo, stating that the individual had allegedly used a child and made fun of the country’s freedom. He emphasized that freedom is highly valued in Bangladesh and that such actions would not be tolerated by the people.
