Shahabuddin Chuppu was the president of Pabna District Jubo League in 1974. At present, he is a member of the advisory council of Awami League.
The Awami League submitted its name on Sunday morning, the last day for submitting nominations for the presidential election. A delegation led by party general secretary Obaidul Quader met the Chief Election Commissioner.
The ruling Awami League holds an absolute majority in the National Parliament, making the nomination by the party likely to result in an unopposed election for the single candidate.
Since the introduction of the parliamentary system of government in Bangladesh through the 12th amendment of the constitution, the president has only been elected through polling once, in 1991, when 140 parliamentarians of the ruling BNP were in the parliament and other parliamentarians were from Awami League, Jatiya Party and seven other parties. Since then, a vote has not been necessary in the presidential election.
