Mahmud of the Awami League wins the Gaibandha-5 by-election.

Awami League nominated candidate Md Mahmud Hasan Ripon has won the by-election to Gaibandha-5 (Phulchari-Saghata) constituency which was held amid tight security measures on Wednesday.,

As per the unofficial result announced by Returning Officer (RO) Md Faridul Islam, Mahmud secured 82,813 votes to beat his nearest rival, Jatiya Party candidate HM Golam Shahid Ronju who got 45,761 votes.,

RO Faridul announced the result at Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office after counting of votes in 145 polling centres in the two upazilas. ,

Voting in the by-election took place from 8:30am to 4:30pm, without any break and with the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

After monitoring the election from Dhaka through 1,242 CCTV cameras installed in the polling stations, the Election Commission (EC) said that the election took place peacefully and witnessed 35 per cent voter turnout. ,

As many as 3,39,743 voters were expected to cast their votes in the fresh by-polls.,

The Gaibandha-5 constituency, which fell vacant after the death of former deputy speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah on July 23, 2022, went to a by-election on October 12 this year which was suspended due to irregularities.,
