Prime Minister wants World Heart Foundation’s support in medical research

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sought the cooperation of the World Heart Federation (WHF) to conduct research on basic medical sciences and develop skilled manpower in the health sector.

On Saturday (December 3) Ganabhaban elected president of WHF Dr. When Jagat Narula comes for a courtesy visit, the Prime Minister wants this cooperation.

Prime Minister said help us in conducting basic research on medical science and provide advanced training to develop our manpower.

Pointing out that basic research is very important for the overall development of the country, the Prime Minister said that his government is giving more importance to research on medical science to improve the health care sector.

 

Referring to research in the agricultural sector, he said, Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in food production besides increasing production of milk, meat and fish. Research has mainly contributed to Bangladesh’s success in agriculture, including achieving food self-sufficiency.

Summarizing the steps taken for the overall development of the health sector, the Prime Minister said that the main goal of his government is to bring healthcare to the doorsteps of the people.

The Prime Minister said that people are getting 30 types of medicines free from the community clinic. Indigent and poor diabetic patients are also getting free insulin.

He said that the government has already established five medical universities at the divisional headquarters for higher education and research in medical science and is thinking of establishing a medical university in each division.

 

Sheikh Hasina said that many specialized hospitals have been built in the public and private sectors for the treatment of heart, kidney and cancer patients. Each region aims to build specialized hospitals.

The Prime Minister also said that Bangladesh has achieved great success in the pharmaceutical sector. Currently all life saving medicines are being produced and exported abroad.

WHF president-elect Jagat Narula lauded the development of Bangladesh’s health sector under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and described the progress as ‘impressive progress’.

Jagat Narula said Bangladesh has a lot of talented doctors who need proper training and support to improve their skills.

He said, I am going to take over as the president of the World Heart Federation next January and aim to work with Bangladesh, India and Mongolia first on heart disease.

 

Dr. Narula stressed the need to sensitize mothers about NCDs. Because it helps to reach its benefits at the grassroots faster.
