The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has almost completed the investigation into the murder case of former police superintendent Babul Akhtar’s wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu. Based on the evidence found in the investigation, it has been said in the charge sheet that Mitu was killed with the planning and financing of Babul. Babul Akhtar paid 3 lakh taka to the killers to kill his wife. There were 6 people on the spot in the killing mission.
According to the concerned sources, the counsel for the state side has already signed the memorandum of evidence (MOE) of the case. Babul Akhtar has been made the main accused in the charge sheet . The remaining six defendants are – Md. Kamrul Islam Shikder Musa, Ehteshamul Haque Bholaiya, Md. Motaleb Mia Wasim, Md. Anwar Hossain, Md. Khairul Islam Kalu and Shahjahan Mia.PBI inspector Abu Zafar Mohammad Omar Farooq, the investigating officer of the case, told Dhaka Post that after completing the investigation of the Mitu murder case, the work of preparing the charge sheet is almost at its final stage. After receiving the approval from Dhaka, the investigation report will be submitted to the court. I hope to be able to submit the investigation report to the court soon. While investigating, I came to know that Mitu was killed with the planning and financing of Babul Akhtar.
Based on the evidence found in the investigation, it has been said in the charge sheet that the involvement of Babul Akhtar has been found in the investigation. Babul planned and financed Mitu’s murder. At the time of the murder, six people were present at the scene of the killing mission. One supplied the weapon. Babul Akhtar paid 3 lakh taka to the killers to kill his wife. Police officer Babul’s ‘source’ Md led the mission to kill Mitu. Kamrul Islam Shikder Musa. Babul’s extramarital affair with a foreign woman working in an international development organization caused turmoil in their family. Because of this, Babul decided to kill Akhtar’s wife.
On the morning of June 5, 2016, Mahmuda Khanam (Mitu) was shot and stabbed to death by miscreants on his way to drop his son in the school bus at Nizam Road in Chittagong city. This incident was widely discussed throughout the country. Mitu’s husband Superintendent of Police Babul Akter was staying in Dhaka at the time of the incident. After the incident, Babul Akhtar returned to Chittagong and filed a murder case against unknown persons at Panchlaish police station.
He alleged in the case that his wife might have been killed for anti-terrorist activities. However, the course of the case changed as the days went by. At one point, the name of husband Babul Akhtar came into focus. The PBI took him into custody for questioning after finding that he was involved in the murder.
Later on May 12 last year, a new case was filed against eight people including Babul Akhtar. PBI interrogated Babul Akhtar on five-day remand in this case. After the remand, Babul was supposed to give a statement in court, but later he did not give a statement. Later he was sent to Chittagong Jail.
On January 25 this year, the PBI filed the final report of the case filed by Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain in the court. According to the agency, Mitu’s father’s case is being settled through the final report to advance the investigation of the case filed by Babul Akhtar in the same incident. Two cases cannot proceed in the same incident. Recently the court found it flawed. Therefore, the final report of the case filed by Mitu’s father has been submitted in accordance with the court’s observation and as per the rules. As per the direction of the court, further investigation of Babul’s case will continue.
PBI inspector Abu Zafar Mohammad Omar Farooq is investigating both the cases of Mitu’s murder. Meanwhile, further investigation of Babul Akhtar’s case is going on. During further investigation, Babul Akhtar was arrested in a case of his own making on January 9 this year by the order of the court.
According to court sources, the PBI submitted the final report to the court after completing the investigation of the case filed by Babul Akhtar in connection with Mitu’s murder. But the court ordered further investigation into the case without taking the final report.Mitu’s father, former police officer Mosharraf Hossain, alleged in his case that Babul Akhtar had an extramarital affair with Gayatri Amar Singh, a foreign national working in the International Development Organization. After the matter came to light, Mitu’s relationship deteriorated. Because of this, Babul planned to hire people to kill Mitu. According to sources related to the investigation, PBI found the truth of Musharraf’s allegations in the investigation.
After the seizure of a book of Babul Akhtar, which was gifted as evidence in the case, the tangle of murders unfolded. Gayatri gifted Babul an English language book titled ‘Taliban’ written by Ahmed Rashid. On the third page of that book, Gayatri Amar Singh’s own handwriting and on the blank page after the last page 276, Babul Akhter’s handwriting contains some information about their ‘first meeting’ in English.
In view of the application of the investigating officer on March 7, Babul Akhter’s handwriting samples were collected on the orders of the court. Based on the expert opinion, PBI confirmed that the writings on the pages of the book are of Babul Akhtar.
PBI inspector Abu Zafar Mohammad Omar Farooq said, “We have uncovered the mystery of this murder by using information technology, verifying the information given by different people, and examining various signs of the case. Four persons arrested after Mitu’s murder have been acquitted of the case due to non-involvement.
Talking to the people concerned, it is known that Babul Akhtar, Wasim, Shahjahan Mia and Anwar Hossain are in jail in connection with Mitu’s murder. And Bholaiya is on bail. And since the murder, Kamrul Islam has been missing.
