A rare pink diamond weighing 34 grams has been found in Angola, Africa. It is believed to be the largest pink diamond found in the last 300 years. The 170 carat stone has been named ‘Lulu Rose’. Named after the mine in Angola where it was found.
It is believed to be the largest pink diamond since the 185 carat Darya-e-Noor. Experts believe that Darya-e-Noor was cut from another big rock. It is among the crowns of the former royal family of Iran.
‘Lulu Rose’ is a Type 2A diamond. This means, it has little or no defects.
It is the fifth largest diamond from the Lulo mine in Angola. The mine is a joint venture between Australia’s Lucapa Diamond Company and the Angolan government.
Such rare pink diamonds have sold for hundreds of millions of dollars in the past. A diamond known as the ‘Pink Star’ was sold at an auction in Hong Kong in 2017 for $71.2 million.
But fine jewelry expert Joanna Hardy says it’s impossible to estimate how much a Lulo Rose will fetch until it’s cut and polished to the right shape.
Pink diamonds are extremely rare. But at the same time they are very tough. It is a difficult task to cut and shape the diamonds.
Expert Joanna Hardy said the stone was unlikely to go public or be auctioned. Because retailers have wealthy buyers who are eager to snap up rare diamonds.
The world’s largest known pink diamond is the 185-carat Darya-e-Noor found in India. Experts believe it was cut from a larger rock.
The Cullinan diamond is the largest diamond ever recorded in all colors. Found in South Africa in 1905, this 3107 carat (over half a kilogram) diamond was cut into 105 pieces.
The largest of these is Cullinan 1. It is the largest ‘clear cut’ diamond in the world. Cullinan 1 is part of the Crown of the United Kingdom.
